Baden-Baden’s casino and the conversation house
The Kurhaus places casino rooms inside a longer history of strolling, music and social exchange.
A building for gathering
Baden-Baden’s Kurhaus places casino history within a larger social building. Its official account describes Friedrich Weinbrenner’s new conversation house as a hall, reading room, gambling rooms, restaurant and theatre. Construction was completed in 1824. The casino’s setting was therefore designed around several forms of leisure and gathering from the beginning.
Follow the colonnade
The building’s distinctive front columns were made from Murgtal sandstone. Behind them, the conversation room let spa guests promenade in poor weather, with gambling tables in side rooms. This relationship between shared hall and gaming room offers a concrete way to study the casino’s place within nineteenth-century resort life.
Read the name literally
Conversation house is a useful lens for understanding this casino destination. Our interpretation is to look for how the façade, hall and side rooms organise different kinds of encounter. The historical account also reminds readers that fashionable resort life was socially unequal. An attractive casino setting can be studied for its design while keeping the people outside its circle in view.
